About the KESP™ School

KESP™ means Kinetic Engagement Sparring Partner™: a trained professional who helps present a changing, supervised training picture, rather than only a fixed bite target. The School develops that role through purposeful scenarios, observation and a record the team can examine.

Hour one, day one. Before anyone zips into a suit.

This school teaches the KESP™ to really train the dog, and to fight the dog. Not to stand there and absorb it.

Every class opens here. Each student answers these questions in writing before the first repetition. The answers are filed. On the last day, the student answers them again, this time with their own recorded data in front of them.

This one's for the KESP™.
First, respect. Anyone who climbs into a bite suit and gives the time and energy it takes to let a dog bite has a tough job. It takes a lot out of you.
Watch almost any session. The person in the suit loads the pressure. The dog crunches down and bites harder. The suit grunts back, like he’s telling the dog, “Yes, that’s it.”
I get it. But how is that ending a fight? How is that even a fight?
The dog was given one answer to every problem: bite harder. Nobody asked it to transition, recalibrate or re-engage somewhere that stops the threat.
So if the answer is always “ignore it and bite harder,” what is the dog really learning?
To ignore the threat.
Am I missing something? Then show me.
Pressure is information. Calibration gives it a purpose, a dose and a measurement. Without that, it's stimulation.
The handler has to live with what the dog learned in your session.
This class gives you what the suit never could: proof.

Block A · Pressure or Threat?

Is it pressure when you hold a stick and act like you're about to beat the dog? Or is it a threat?
When you load the pressure and the dog bites harder, what problem did the dog just solve?
If the answer to every threat is “bite harder,” how is that different from teaching the dog to ignore the threat?

Block B · What Are You Training?

What are you training the dog to do? Say it in one sentence.
Are we teaching the dog to ignore it and bite hard, or to fight properly?
When was the last time you asked a dog to transition, recalibrate or re-engage?

Block C · Protection Is Not Apprehension

What is the difference when you're talking about a protection canine?
What is the purpose of the dog biting, holding hard, thrashing and shaking? What does it accomplish? Who does it stop?
A protection dog isn't apprehending anyone. If we're talking protection, we're talking fighting. So who ends the fight: the dog, the handler, or the attacker?

After the session, what can you hand the handler besides a grunt and “good dog”? What did you measure?

03The Simple QuestionsTen direct questions for discussion

Step outside the bubble. No jargon and no system to defend. Just common sense. Anyone who has ever been in a fight can answer these.

If someone swings a stick at you, do you hold still and squeeze harder, or do you stop the stick?
If the dog only ever bites one arm, what is the attacker's other hand doing?
What is the difference between a canine pushing in and pulling?
If the fight only ends when the person in the suit stops, who taught the dog how a fight ends?
If the dog is being hit while it holds, who is protecting the dog?
Would you rather the dog bite hard, or bite where it stops the threat?
Is the dog learning to win, or learning to wait?
When the dog thrashes and shakes, is the attacker less able to hurt anyone, or just more uncomfortable?
If two people feel the same bite differently, which one is right?
If you can't measure it, how do you know it got better?

The questions only work if the words mean something. KESP™ students use these four terms, defined the same way every time:

Term	What it is	The answer we want from the dog
Threat	Something showing intent or ability to cause harm: a stick strike, a knife hand, a gun hand, a kick, a charge	Interrupt it. Engage the source of harm.
Pressure	Anything that raises the cost of continuing: eye contact, body drive, fighting the grip, bad footing	Persist or adapt.
Sensory load	Noise, yelling, movement, the sound of a stick. Stress, not harm.	Filter it out.
Focus	Attention on the correct target while under load	Discriminate. Find what is doing the harm.

When a stick strike is called “pressure,” the dog gets rewarded for tolerating harm. When it's called what it is, a threat, the right answer changes. Call things what they are, and the training changes with them.

Most schools teach this work by feel.

“That was a full grip.” Felt through padding, by one person, at one angle.
“That dog hits hard.” Compared to what?
“Your timing was late.” By how much?
“He's ready.” Based on what?

Same topics, same drills, same words. And the grade depends on who is wearing the suit that day. Change the instructor, the suit or the angle, and the answer changes. That isn't a standard. It's an opinion.

The dog learns engagement from the person in front of it. Four skills in that person decide how fast and how well the dog learns:

Reading the dog: what it's showing, not what you assume
Managing drive: safely, on purpose
Repeatable presentation: the same every time, measurably
Control under pressure: when it goes wrong

A trained KESP™ reduces risk to the dog, the handler and themselves, and gives the handler a dog that's ready for the street. An untrained one builds habits the handler will discover at the worst possible moment.

Instrument readings

Equipment-specific contact-zone, pressure and duration readings where those capabilities are verified. Record device, calibration status, setup and any missing data.

Timestamped observation

Video can support timing, behavior and context review. Timing precision depends on frame rate, synchronization and the defined start and end events.

Reviewer assessment

Safety, interpretation and movement quality still require professional assessment. Written rubrics and multiple reviewers can improve consistency; they do not eliminate judgment.

KAIR™ is a working measurement system, with equipment in pre-beta production for phased 2027 releases. We use the readings to support training review, not to replace the handler’s judgment. Measurements are specific to the supplied equipment, configuration and calibration; production status is not an independent accuracy or safety certification.

What happens if sensors are unavailable?

Use video for observable behavior and timing, and rubrics for assessment. Pressure and other sensor-dependent fields remain “not captured.” They are never replaced by estimates and presented as measured readings.

Student records and card verification

The intended portfolio includes session files, reviewer feedback and development history. Live student accounts, record storage and Pro Series card verification are planned services, not activated by this preview.

PREPARE THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT

Host with purpose.

The uploaded program proposes agency, unit and qualified-group hosting. Dates, locations, staffing, terms and final eligibility must be agreed before booking.

Proposed class format

Working seats: 8–12
Audit seats: Up to 6 · no practical participation
Host allocation: Two working seats, plus agreed audit places
Schedule: Consecutive days
Dog-to-student ratio: At least one suitable dog per working student
Training record: Documented hours; agency acceptance is not automatic

These are proposed general hosting terms. GHOST, DIAGNOSTIC and restricted programs require arrangements appropriate to their own scope.

Before a class is confirmed

Approve the site, facilities and emergency arrangements.
Confirm instructors, suitability screening and equipment.
Agree confidentiality, participant consent and records handling.
Confirm course fees, cancellation terms and travel arrangements.
Finalize assessment rubrics, reviewer roles and reassessment procedures.

Proposed credits and recognition

The source proposes 100 credits, including at least 40 from KESP™ measured work. BASELINE, VECTOR and APEX propose 15 credits each, giving 45 across the core pathway. INOPS4 and SCREEN propose an endorsement plus 5 credits each; prior certifications may contribute up to 40 and verified experience up to 20.

This is a proposed internal K1K9 framework, not external accreditation or a government license. Membership purchase does not award credits or certification. Credit-award rules, evidence requirements and review arrangements require approval before enrollment.

Existing Master Instructor pathway

Master Instructor remains a separately reviewed restricted pathway. Completion of APEX does not automatically award that title or authorize instruction. The relationship between the new school pathway and the earlier instructor program will be finalized before release.
