Apprehension Is Not Protection

Professional perspectiveSources & notes ↓

FREE ARTICLE PREVIEW

The IGP protection exercises discussed here assess defined behaviors under published rules. My question is whether success in those exercises establishes readiness for a different mission. (FCI-IGP regulations, 2025) If the dog's job is to just hold, what is the objective?

Police patrol apprehension can include surrender without a bite. PERF distinguishes apprehension from apprehension with contact; the two should not be treated as interchangeable. (PERF patrol-canine guidance, p. 8) The distinction I want to examine is custody versus creating a path to safety. A civilian protection plan should not assume the policies, staffing or support of a police patrol operation.
