Nerve, Recovery, and Environmental Confidence

FREE ARTICLE PREVIEW

Drive gets attention because it is easy to see. Nerve is often harder to identify because it reveals itself over time—when the environment changes, when pressure appears, and when the dog has to recover rather than simply react. For any serious working or protection dog, nerve and recovery deserve the same respect as visible intensity.

A stable dog is not a dog that never notices pressure. It is a dog that can process pressure without staying mentally trapped in it. A loud surface, a confined space, unusual movement, environmental clutter, or social pressure may create a moment of concern. The important question is what happens next. Does the dog recover, re-engage, and remain connected to the handler? Or does it avoid, spin up, shut down, or redirect frustration into the wrong place?
