K1K9 · The Kinetic Doctrine™ Article Series · Part 5 of 12 By Corrections Special Operations Handler Joseph Garcia, Founder, K1K9 If a protection program depends on the handler arriving without delay, I want to see the plan for when that assumption fails. “I'll get there” is not the answer to the question. What have you prepared for? What have you actually assessed? And what are you expecting the dog to carry because nobody challenged the plan?

That is the conversation I want to have. Not a contest over whose dog looks more violent. I use Post-Engagement Survival Window™ to describe the interval between canine contact and the handler establishing effective control of the situation. This is my discussion term, not a scientifically validated survival interval, a safe exposure limit, or a promise that a dog can withstand a particular number of seconds.

    Source context & limitations

Shields, Sazma and Yonelinas (2016) report a meta-analysis of acute stress and human executive functions. Working memory and cognitive flexibility were impaired on average; effects on inhibition were more nuanced. These are human findings, not canine diagnostic criteria.

  2. Baldwin and colleagues, 2022

    frontiersin.org · 2022

    Source context & limitations

Baldwin and colleagues published this study in January 2022, despite the 2021 volume/DOI. It examined 122 officers from one Canadian agency in one simulated lethal-force scenario. Associations between stress, training and performance are not a universal physiological threshold or a canine finding.
