People call and say, “I need a protection dog.” Sometimes they mean they need a stable companion with a serious deterrent presence. Sometimes they mean they have already bought a dog and are now realizing that owning a high-drive K1K9 is different from watching a 30-second video on the internet.
Here is the truth: the dog is only one part of the equation.
A High-Performance K1K9 has to live somewhere. That means there is an owner, a family, visitors, children, employees, contractors, vehicles, travel, gates, doors, distractions, stress, noise, and daily routines. The dog does not live in a dramatic social-media clip. The dog lives in the real world.
That is why K1K9 develops the team.
We assess the dog. We assess the owner or handler. We assess the environment. Then we build a realistic path forward. We look at control, communication, stability, management, confidence, recovery, consistency, and the owner’s willingness to do the work after the trainer leaves.
A trainer can show a dog a drill. A coach must develop the person who is going to live with the consequences of every decision. That is not an insult to trainers. It is reality. The dog does not care how many likes the video gets. The dog needs clear leadership, consistent expectations, good health care, appropriate management, and a handler who knows when to act—and when not to act.
If someone wants a dog they can show off but cannot control, K1K9 is not the correct program. If someone wants a serious, stable, well-managed K1K9 team and is prepared to do the work, then we can have a professional conversation.
