Anybody can say the word “control.” The question is whether control is present when the environment changes.
Control is not one command shouted when the dog is already overstimulated. Control is the standard built into the relationship before anything goes wrong. It is communication. It is consistency. It is knowing the dog. It is knowing the environment. It is knowing what your dog is seeing, what your dog is hearing, and whether you are still making good decisions.
A serious K1K9 must be managed before, during, and after stress. The handler must understand how to give clear direction, maintain awareness, prevent confusion, and bring the dog back into a stable state. That is not glamorous. It does not always make a good social-media clip. It does, however, make a safer and more responsible team.
At K1K9, we care about the complete standard: stable behavior, clear communication, response to the handler, appropriate management, and recovery. If a person believes “more aggression” automatically means “more protection,” that person is missing the point.
The goal is not to make a K1K9 reckless. The goal is to build a K1K9 that is clear, responsive, manageable, and properly handled by a person worthy of that responsibility.
